Salcombe CE Primary welcomes new therapy dog into school
Shadow, from Pets As Therapy, has joined the team at Salcombe CE Primary as their new therapy dog. Pets As Therapy is a charitable organisation providing free dog visits to schools (and other places) to offer comfort, confidence, connection and companionship.
Miss Lottie Bond, Head of School, said, ‘We welcomed Shadow, the beautiful labrador, along with Stanley and Anna from Pets As Therapy into school before Easter for a preliminary visit. Shadow is now able to act as our therapy dog as she passed her training and assessments. We’re excited to welcome them into school as dog visits have been known to reduce anxiety, boost attendance, and even improve literacy by providing a calm and non-judgmental companion for pupils. We're hoping Shadow will also boost self-esteem, improve concentration and support behavioural development.’
Helen Warren, Director of Operations at First Federation Trust, said, ‘We’re really pleased to have Shadow as part of the Salcombe family and look forward to seeing the benefits she will bring for children. We’re also mindful of children who are allergic or afraid of animals, so Shadow will always move through the school on a lead, will be closely monitored at all times and never left alone. We’ve conducted all of the necessary risk assessments required including checking vaccinations, making sure she’s in good health, and all the necessary insurances.’
Miss Bond continues, ‘We’re looking forward to witnessing the growth and development of our pupils once Shadow has fully settled, and we will continue to ensure everyone is happy and safe in the process.’
