Pupils at Mrs Ethelston’s CE Primary in Uplyme near Lyme Regis, are being treated with ‘love, care, compassion and respect’ in a ‘happy, safe and inclusive’ environment according to the latest SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) report by the Church of England.
Mrs Katy Allington, Head of School, said, ‘Our SIAMS report shines a light on the hard work we’ve put into embedding our Christian vision into the daily lives of our pupils. Based on Colossians 2:6, we offer deep Christian roots, nurture strong growth, and allow children to flourish, encouraging them to develop their thinking, values and confidence; to live with joy and kindness, be happy, and shine in their learning and friendships. We pride ourselves on providing a safe space which is enjoyed by all and in turn breeds pride and parental confidence.’
Wellbeing is a priority at Mrs Ethelston’s, with well-trained pupils acting as ambassadors who support their peers, and with staff being very well supported by leaders and by First Federation Trust, a multi-academy of 29 primaries spanning from Plymouth to Weymouth, which Mrs Ethelston’s joined in September 2024. Staff concerns are actioned with compassion.
Claire Fegan, Director of School Improvement for First Federation, said ‘It’s very clear how important the Christian values of love, peace, perseverance, friendship, good choices and celebrating life are to all at Mrs Ethelston’s, and it’s excellent to see recognition of how this provides such a strong foundation to everything at the school. The inspiring curriculum is led by the vision and values in a supporting and nurturing environment, allowing everyone to flourish and shine in their learning, behaviour and actions.
There is a strong emphasis on RE alongside other core subjects, allowing children to develop well-rounded views of the world and an understanding of a range of beliefs. Teaching staff work hard to ensure learning is engaging and well-structured which allows pupils to progress well.’
Mrs Allington continues, 'We’re very proud of our pupils in their exemplary, caring behaviour. We have a range of leadership responsibilities which empowers the students in those roles and provides inspiration to others, and our children are active in their charitable contributions including visiting the local care home and fundraising. We have something called ‘Mrs E’s Freeze’ where we pause our normal lessons on six occasions throughout the year, offering children a chance to reflect spiritually, morally and culturally.'
